Obituary

Entered into rest at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on May 8th 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his beloved wife Rita Bouchard Edwards Darling. Lovingly remembered by his friend and companion Phyllis Ross. Brother to Grace, James "Sonny", Jean, Catherine, Molly, Stanton "Tonto", Russell "Rusty" and Ann, all deceased. Devoted father to Jane (Julio), Michael (Susana), Danny and Meredith. Loving stepfather to Rita's children Peter, Sandra, Cyndi, Perry and Robin. Beloved Poppa to Jane's children Jon (Nicky), Ben (Angela) and Michaela and to Rita's grandchildren. Great-grandfather to Ben's children Brandon, Jaime, Cloey and Emmett and to Jon's daughter Isla.

Dave graduated from BCI in 1952 and worked at the CNR before joining DuPont (now Invista) where he enjoyed working in the lab with many friends for 39 years. He was a professional alpine ski instructor for over 25 years with the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance and was the past President of the Y Border Ski Club with local activities at The Flying Inch at St. Lawrence Park, Mount Laurier and ARDA Valley. He was also a part-time Ski Instructor at various resorts for over 40 years including his favourites, Mount Sutton and Calabogie Peaks. In addition to all of his skiing activities, Dave was a former Junior Intermediate B and long-time Gentlemen's League hockey player and a lifelong golf enthusiast. His closing remarks, "I didn't do everything I set out to do, but I tried".

A special thank you to Gary Lalonde and Emily Clarey (granddaughter of Rita) and to all the many health care professionals who looked after Dave so well.

A celebration of Dave's life will be held at the Irvine Memorial Chapel, 2451 County Rd. 15, Maitland on Thursday, May 16th from 12 noon until 2 pm. Interment will follow in the Tower Columbarium. Thank you so much! We all had such a wonderful time together and dad also treasured those moments when we were all together. We have some photos with you and Ian and dad and my brothers hunting and fishing together. He was in his element.

Dave's passion for skiing lead my father and I to become involved with the Y Border Ski Club for many years when I was young. We also enjoyed many days skiing with Dave and his sons Danny and Mike. What was suppose to be an introduction to the 'recreation' sport of skiing and ski teaching by Dave became a life long career for me as a Ski School Director and Head Ski Racing Coach. Thanks Dave!! Like everyone that got to know Dave in the skiing world in Brockville we will always appreciate his dedication for passing on his love of the sport of skiing and all the friendships that it created. My condolences to Danny, Mike, Jane, Cyndi and the entire family. Kelly Blair

I have many fond memories of Mister Darling from my teen years. He was always welcoming and he had a great sense of humour. He generously let me tag along with Mike and Danny when they went fishing and duck hunting. Once while pulling up the boat, Mister Darling's foot slipped and he said that he heard a crack and that his ankle was broken. Because I was a teenager, I knew everything and said that if it was broken he wouldn't be able to walk on it. It was with great relish that he corrected me a few days later, of course his ankle was broken. I guess I shouldn't mention trying to use the ski patrol stretcher as a toboggan. My condolences to the Darling family and my thoughts are with you

We have great memories of the times we shared together. We also have several photos of you with dad and the rest of the hunting and fishing party doing manly things.. Dad kept the photos close to hand and enjoyed reliving the memories

To Dave’s family - my most sincere condolences. I worked with Dave at DuPont. My granddaughter Chloe Murphy was one of his care givers before he went into hospital. When I told her of his passing she said “he was such a nice man”. Dave was a true “gentle man” and will be missed by many. Thoughts and prayers are with all of his family at this difficult time. Sincerely, Sharron Botham

Dad really loved being cared for by Chloe and looked forward to her visits. He spoke of her often
